Ha! Neil’s full of zingers!

Something I really love about this page is how it could be its own one-page comic in an anthology of comics about awkward conversations you had with your parents when you were a teenager.

If you haven’t noticed, Americus is pretty dialogue heavy. The fun and challenging part about this is that since there’s not a lot of action going on I had to find different ways to keep the pages interesting. One of the main ways I tried to do this was in the acting, particularly in this scene.

A good resource for other ways to do keep things interesting is Wally Wood‘s 22 Panels That Always Work. I was first passed on this knowledge in college by one of my really good professors, Durwin Talon. I have it hanging above my drafting table to help me stir the creative pot when I’m having a hard time. [That, and it adds an air of 'authentic cartoonist' to my studio].

Anyhow, if you’re interested in a copy for yourself, here’s a high res version via Joel Johnson:
