So today’s page is a good example of the editing process we went through with Greg & Galen and how things got changed after I had finished a page and we discussed when something wasn’t quite working.

If you’ll remember at the beginning of the chapter, MK mentioned how her script was very minimal and sometimes I took the opportunity to use some different storytelling techniques. This is page a good example of a page where I tried to do that, but it didn’t really work out.

Here’s how I originally had the page’s top tier:

We talked about it and decided that having that first quiet beat really slowed it down and gave it a pause that didn’t fit the scene . We wanted the action of Nancy slapping Danny to be as sudden on the reader as it was on him.

Now I know what you’re thinking – Didn’t you just tell us a couple of weeks ago not to tell in four panels what you can tell in two?!!

I guarantee you that this was all part of the show, folks. Today’s behind-the-scenes peek just helps me prove my point!

So the lesson: If your brain is having a conflict between being arty-farty and being a hack, always go with being a hack.

I would like to take this moment to remind our more impressionable readers to not take me seriously. There have been plenty of successful cartoonists that have been hacks, but that’s not the way to go. Stay in school, work hard, and learn perspective & anatomy.
