I went to a Christian university for a few years and took a children’s lit course, which was pretty much my favourite thing ever. We studied Harry Potter, which at the time was a big issue (you know the story, I’m sure), and to my surprise about 10 extra students who were NOT in the class showed up in support of the books and to say how great they were. I don’t remember anyone arguing against it content-wise, actually (one girl said she wouldn’t read it to her kids, but didn’t come down any harder on the books than that). If anything the debate was more about whether or not Harry Potter was a fad. I think I came down on the side of fad. I was kinda wrong.
Sadly, just when I was feeling smug about only knowing Christians with working brains re: kid lit, I recently had a lovely, artistic, liberal Christian parent totally go off on the inappropriateness of Toy Story 3 for children (it scared her son), so … yeah.
I actually love this comic because it reminded me of the whole “Harry Potter Debacle”. But as the author shows, there’s more important things in life.
