Chapter8 Page1

by Jonathan on May 25th, 2011 at 12:01 am

It’s chapter 8! The showdown is starting!

A quick side note: Can anyone catch the cameo in this page? First person to comment with the correct answer will get a prize!

Here’s the rest of the short news blurbs for today:

• I know I’m TOTALLY late to the party, but I’ve just finished reading The Hunger Games. I finished the last half in one sitting last night and stayed up a little too late doing so. I kind of woke up with a reading hangover, which was weird. Or it could be that I didn’t drink any water last night. I like the idea of a reading hangover better.

Jason also pointed me to this short comics sequence of the beginning of the book done by fellow First Second cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks. It’s kind of amazing.

• MK and I have begun our project that we’re doing exclusively for SPX to promote Americus. I don’t want to talk too much about it, but I will tell you that it’s A.] not a comic and B.] it’s awesome.

Last page of chapter 7, 152 pages in. Seems like we just started, but it’s winding down now, only two chapters to go.

Chapter7 Page18

by Jonathan on May 18th, 2011 at 12:01 am

With this chapter quickly coming to a close, and the realization that there are only two more chapters left, the thought that we’ll be wrapping our online stint in a couple months is making me a bit sentimental. I know I haven’t always been there with posting stuff for whatever reason, but I’m hoping to make more of an effort to make sure that I post something every week for the rest of the go.

That being said, sometimes it’s hard to think of things to post. Unless the page had some sort of interesting history in its creation, or there is some interesting news this week, sometimes the lack of additional content is because I can’t really think of anything to post. Is there anything you readers would like to see or read?

Something that I’ve really was hoping would get going would be some fan art from people reading or from illustrator/cartoonist friends, but it’s been hard to come by because everyone so busy. So if you draw or paint or whatever and have some spare time, please whoop up some fan art and send it our way!

Anyhow, for this week, I have a couple of short news briefs:

WSD art auction results – The auction wrapped up a couple of weeks ago, but I just sent the art & the cash monies to the WSd this week, so I kind of consider it ending right around now. Anyhow, the total result I was able to muster up was $245, which ended up being about $350 worth for the school to spend at Powell’s.

But that’s not all! The Columbian, the local newspaper in Vancouver, WA where the Washington school for the deaf  is located, ran a small article on the auction, and a local woman donated $500 for the library in memory of her sister.

So all in all, we were able to raise $850 for the school. All for graphic novels! Yay!

I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone that donated art and that bid on art. I know that with times being the way they are, and with all the other things people could be donatig their time and money towards, it really means a lot.

Apathea & Neil - So over the course of the last week, I have watched the movies Hanna & It’s Kind of a Funny Story. If you’ll remember, Jason and I had casted the lead actors of both of these movies [Saorise Ronan & Keir Gilchrist] to play Apathea & Neil, respectively, in an Americus movie. All I can say is: THE POWERS THAT BE, PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Keir Gilchrist was soooo Neil, that I completely forgot his character’s name in the movie and kept calling him Neil thew whole movie. And Saorise Ronan is so perfect at being incredibly badass, and yet equally human and vulnerable. I know that whole casting call post we wrote was just a pipe dream, but after seeing those movies, it’s killing me that it can’t be a reality.

At The Rumpus, there’s an excellent illustrated piece/sorta comic about the San Francisco Public Library by Wendy Macnaughton. It’s totally beautiful. Go read it!
